On the psu, modern computer systems rarely use more than 250W power (unless you've build one heck of a super system, that was probably also super expensive), so if the 300W psu is a good psu and not some el cheapo crap psu, there should be no problems.

I just find this so funny.
Not that I disagree at all, it's that when I started building systems 20yrs ago if you had a 250-300W PSU you were on top of the heap.
Then wattage's accessories, etc... went all stupid and 250-300W was a joke.

Now we're right back to where we started, too funny.

PS - Ulysses, good luck on your search for the perfect card to meet your needs.

Thanks for the advice, I did try the x1950pro but it didnt like running Battlefield 2 bad company which is why I ended up selling it, ideally I am looking for a card that is no more than £50 ($70ish).

I am not actually in a rush to buy one as the onboard graphics seems to run LOTR ok at the moment.

What amount of money would you consider to be appropriate for a budget card?

Considering the card you linked, I'm going to assume you want it to be as cheap as possible.

Personally, I would not go for the type of card you linked though. It's a previous generation card and it isn't really any cheaper than a similar current generation card, the successor would be ati hd5450. About the same price and speed, but newer and supporting dx11.

You should know that these cards are the cheapest that are available atm, so they won't give you very good speeds. I read you had a 1950pro before, well, it's quite likely these cards will actually not be any faster than your old one.

If you could afford to spend 50% more, you could get a card that's over twice as fast though, ie. the hd5550/5570 series.

Considering the suggestion you found yourself, I'm going to assume you do not want to spend more than $70, so the ati hd5670 and nvidia gt240 are out of the question, but if you can spend that much, those cards will do even better.

I'm currently also looking into a new graphics card myself, not because my old one isn't working anymore, but because I'd like to have a passively cooled one, I'm very much into silent computing these days. My current personal choice is a passively cooled hd5670, but I'm still holding off a bit since nvidia is due to release a new model too in a month, it might be better (or not), but im hoping it'll press prices a bit more. ^^

Ello

Last month I bought a new pc to replace my old system.  The new machine came with on-board graphics which really will only run older games (battlefield 2 bad company wont run).

Can anyone advise a good budget pci-express graphics card, one thing that has be slighly worried is the fact that the new machine has a 300w PSU.

I am currently looking at getting a ATI HD 4550 http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250590379056&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Any advise would be great

Well.

I'm now fully back in my parents house and unpacked. Almost feels like the last year in the flat never happened. Ah well...

It was real. You'll get back out into the world again.
