As the following story says:
Quote
A US boffin has effectively put the mockers on Star Trek-style warp speed travel to the stars by warning that interstellar hydrogen gas would become deadly to humans as they approached the speed of light.
Read the Story Here

Now I would have imagined that just the stress of G/speed alone would kill you first...
... but does this put a dampener on our plans of Warp Speed?

Never mind, regular speed can kill you too, but just wait till everyone has warp speed, you'll have little old ladies crashing into you!

That unit does not look like it can take warp speed, she'd be ripped appart!

her force field and inertial dampeners would kick in long before she died.  Wink

Ah, yes - this was one of the big problems people had with Threshold... essentially, the faster you go... the deadlier stuff gets.

I'm not entirely sure a warp drive would quite be in real space though, as the real world concept Alcubierre drive is KIND of in a bubble... or might have a naked singularity at its front... but yes, this is a pretty serious issue with even subluminal speeds - space is big and empty but going very fast is still dangerous for a whole mess of reasons.

It's why I scoffed at the travel time in Avatar... I worked out the AVERAGE speed was something like 0.9c - that's CRAZY. Of course, that was a film where mechs were fitted with giant combat knives and a native people WITH BIOLOGICAL USB CABLES FOR TAILS.

We just need the Old people driving our starships

Then we'd all be safe.
