I was just going to check my email when i saw this report on www.sky.com about scientists discovering new planets here is the link

http://news.sky.com/skynews/Home/World-News/Planets-In-Other-Solar-Systems-Seen-With-Visible-Light-For-The-First-Time-Ever/Article/200811215151373

what do you think about this?

Moved to the science section

I read about it, the first time we could actually 'see' them instead of 'measure' them, now if only they were habitable. Cheesy

Yeh i must have blanked out this section on the forum

how long do you reckon it would take before we could check to see if any of the planets are habitable and if there is life there

Depending on what you mean by 'check to see', I could answer you this right now with a decent amount of certainty: there is in all likelihood, no life on those planets, they seem to be huge gas giants: "Analysis of the brightness and colors of the objects (at multiple wavelengths) shows that these objects are about seven and ten times the mass of Jupiter. As in our solar system, these giant planets orbit in the outer regions of this system – at roughly 25, 40, and 70 times the Earth-Sun separation. The furthest planet orbits just inside a disk of dusty debris, similar to that produced by the comets of the Kuiper Belt objects of our solar system (just beyond the orbit of Neptune at 30 times the Earth-Sun distance)."

the planets they found are to far out and to large to have "life" as we know it. if they have life we may not notice.

guessing when we'll be able to see planets that are closer to Earth conditions depends on the types and locations of the telescopes we use. orbital stations like Hubble are better for long range viewing.

but you can not expect all life in the universe to only be able to thrive in the same living conditions as we do coz im pretty sure that the chances of other life being exactly like us is close to improbable

Indeed, but chances of finding intelligent talkative life on a gas gaint are even slimmer. ^^

I mentioned new life forms might be unnoticed.
