Yup, looks like they finally did it and it's not someone Marvel movie fans aren't familiar with

Quote
After nearly two years of speculation, The Hollywood Reporter broke the news on Monday that Chris Evans  will be playing Marvel Comics' iconic hero Captain America in the big-screen adaptation.

The movie, titled "The First Avenger: Captain America," was announced in 2008 after Marvel Studio's first production, "Iron Man," became a box-office hit. The names of many actors -- from established stars to mostly unknowns -- have been rumored to be up for the role for months. Action movie veterans Channing Tatum ("G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra") and Garrett Hedlund (the upcoming "Tron Legacy") were reportedly considered, as were TV regulars Chace Crawford ("Gossip Girl") and Scott Porter ("Friday Night Lights"). Even wild-cards like "The Office" funnyman John Krasinski tested for the part.

Chris Evans was a late addition to the roster of potential leads, but he had already established himself as a comic-book hero by playing the Human Torch in the two "Fantastic Four" movies. This goes against director Joe Johnston's stated intention to use an unknown actor for the role. But Evans is an American, which was Johnston's other requirement (and left out foreigners like Australian "Avatar" star Sam Worthington).

as someone commented at scifiwire.com, looks like Marvel is recycling its actor list.

Fantastic Four wasn't produced by Marvel Studios was it? I didn't think it was.

I can see it working... and he is actually a good likeness to Captain America (although, I think too young and fresh faced) but we'll just have to see how it goes. It's hard to tell until you see them in the role...

I believe what maybrick meant was that both Fantastic Four films were on THIS list and not this one. The difference basically boils down to Marvel's level of control, which will be considerably higher in ventures that aren't co-produced and they've been moving toward taking it all in-house (and with a backer like Disney - it's easy to see it going 100% in-house), which makes sense to me because I think they're two for two so far... I guess we'll have to see how Iron Man 2 and Thor go... but my hopes for them are considerably higher than those for the Wolverine sequel or Venom...

Honestly, if Kick Ass is good - and it certainly has the potential to be - it'll probably be the first good film that wasn't pure Marvel Studios since Spiderman 2...

You're right, Tenebrae, that's what I meant. Thanks for clarifying because it saves me the time and energy. Smile

I didn't like him that much in FF, but maybe that was more the character than the actor. As far as age goes, it's true that in the comics the Captain appears more "seasoned", but that's because he's been at the game for a while. It makes sense that when Rogers gets dosed with the super serum back in WWII the scientists would also be looking for a younger man of enlistment age. But at 28, Chris Evans really isn't even that young anymore and by time The Avengers movie is released his age will be roughly that of the comic book Captain America. I think he'll be alright.

it still seems, to me, that movies with Marvel characters have recently used actors for more than one role. casting office choices? Marvel choices? are they the best actors? is someone starting a trend? dunno. I have nothing against Chris Evans or Ryan Reynolds. just wondered why and how those decisions were made.

...and good luck to Reynolds in his DC movie as Green Lantern.

Hahaha, a DC movie that ISN'T the next Christ Nolan Batman instalment (I'm guessing they'll call it a day at a trilogy anyway)? You can put that on your Christmas list alongside Duke Nukem Forever, BWHAHAHA!

And really, how many actors have they recycled? It's not like watching sci-fi, where someone gets a recurring role in something and then can pretty much blag their way onto ANY science fiction show for the rest of their life?
