Title: TV: FRINGE
Post by: Amnot Borg on September 07, 2008, 12:47:43 AM
FOX has a new series coming up for the Autumn called FRINGE.
It's supposed to be something of a mystery/scifi program.
Time to see what J.J. Abrams does to tv again.

Quote from: http://www.fox.com/programming/shows/new/fringe.htm
From J.J. Abrams ("Lost"), Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, the team behind "Star Trek," "Mission: Impossible III" and "Alias," comes a new drama that will thrill, terrify and explore the blurring line between science fiction and reality.

When an international flight lands at Boston's Logan Airport and the passengers and crew have all died grisly deaths, FBI Special Agent OLIVIA DUNHAM (newcomer Anna Torv) is called in to investigate. After her partner, Special Agent JOHN SCOTT (Mark Valley, "Boston Legal"), is nearly killed during the investigation, a desperate Olivia searches frantically for someone to help, leading her to DR. WALTER BISHOP (John Noble, "Lord of the Rings: Return of the King"), our generation's Einstein. There's only one catch: he's been institutionalized for the last 20 years, and the only way to question him requires pulling his estranged son PETER (Joshua Jackson, "Dawson's Creek") in to help.

When Olivia's investigation leads her to manipulative corporate executive NINA SHARP (Blair Brown, "Altered States"), our unlikely trio along with fellow FBI Agents PHILLIP BROYLES (Lance Reddick, "The Wire"), CHARLIE FRANCIS (Kirk Acevedo, "Oz") and ASTRID FARNSWORTH (Jasika Nicole, "Law & Order: Criminal Intent") will discover that what happened on Flight 627 is only a small piece of a larger, more shocking truth.

FRINGE is directed by Emmy Award-winning Alex Graves ("The West Wing") and produced by Warner Bros. Television and Bad Robot Productions.

Looks like an X-Files knock-off.  Not interested.

Sounds like a pretty cookie cutter story... I hate when they say "It's all part of a bigger picture!" and "crossing the lines between"...

Anyway, I'll see what it's like but to be honest, Abrams is pretty over-rated... I mean, look at Alias. What a laughable show. Mary Suelias, more likely.

Presumably Abrams is trying to get involved in enough projects that when Lost tanks etc. he can say "The problem with Lost was, I had so many other things going on - I couldn't give it the attention it deserved."

Isn't Abrams supposed to be working on Star Trek XI?!

I hope that his many other projects haven't taken away his focus...

I just watched the pilot. I was mildly surprised and found it ...not that bad.

I really did not anticipate the twist ending.

I finally got around to watching S01E01 (not the pilot). The premise is interesting enough. I'm maintaining a "let's wait and see where they go with it" attitude for now.

I thought the first episode was the pilot? a 90 minute including commercials eppy then the rest are one hour.

there was a pilot, then there was S01E01, which aired a couple of weeks ago. both are similar episodes, S01E01 is just sort of re-tooled. the others will be 1 hour episodes, as i understand it

I think Fringe has some casting issues it needs to solve before it's too late. The hot blonde is the only reason I'm still watching this show!

lol, so sex is all that brings you into the audience, huh?

this episode was interesting to me in the weapon used on the bus and in the method used to track down the rogue elements. the guy didn't even need metal braces to hear voices.

Hell yeah! ;)

Seriously though, some things about Fringe that are bothering me:

1. Bishop invariably took part in every experiment;
2. Bishop invariably uses his crazy science to help solve case of the week;
3. all unusual activities revolve around Massive Dynamic;
4. Dawson's Creek guy basically doesn't have anything to do besides playing babysitter;
5. Olivia has no partner (be it male or female) to back her up.

lol, can't help with most of it but the show is called FRINGE so it's about the crazy science Bishop is an expert in. His son should get more into it since he's a genius also.

Lol, all the stuff I brought up was addressed in the latest episode (The Arrival), so I'm quite satisfied with the show now.

Who's the bald guy? Doctor Who? ;D

doctor who can't read minds...can he? the bald guy seems able to.

strange how he seems to keep showing up everywhere the weird stuff does.

and he has a really weird metabolism too since he eats entire shakers of black pepper on his sandwich with 11 jalapenos on the side. the interesting thing about that is the glass of water should actually make the food hotter since water is very bad after peppers. I think I read that somewhere. milk is better as it coats the stomach. prove me wrong if possible since I actually think that is probably true.

It doesn't do anything - the active agent in peppers isn't water soluble, so the relief from drinking water is only fleeting. Milk works better... I forget why.

Anyway, I've watched it... I've yet to be bowled over but it's a reasonable show.

Fox Orders Full Fringe Season

TV Week reported that Fox has ordered up a full season of its SF series Fringe from creators J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

The network has ordered nine additional episodes, for a total of 22. The Bad Robot/Warner Brothers TV-produced series has averaged a 4.2 rating/11 share among adults aged 18-49 and 10.7 million total viewers since debuting last month, making it the top-rated new show of the season to date in the key demographic.

Fringe is the second first-year series to get a full-season order this fall. The CW's 90210 got a pickup last month.

Fringe stars Joshua Jackson, Anna Torv and John Noble. Bryan Burk and Jeff Pinkner also executive-produce.

despite my skeptical comment above, i meant to TiVo this show, but it slipped my mind.  will try to catch up via the FOX.com full eps.  watched the pilot last night.  it was ok, that's about all i can say.

it is amusing to see josh jackson (aka pacey from "dawson's creek") as the male lead.  hoping james van der beek makes a guest appearance!!!

now it gets really interesting. Leonard Nimoy has beamed aboard the show.

alternate worlds and realities are so fascinating. I love the multiverse.

In season 2, we will get to see more of the "other side". In their world, JFK didn't die and the White House was destroyed in the 9/11 attacks. Did anyone see where Bishop went to visit his son's grave? Peter seems to have died in one world. That leads to interesting ideas. Is the Peter we know a kidnap victim form the other side?

Well, a few spoilers in here for me cuz I just started to watch season one, up to about ep6.

So far I've found it quite interesting and it's no surprise (although only up to ep6) that I'm seeing commercials for season 2.

Appears I will have to make room on my schedule for season 2 this fall.

I'm sorry. I assumed since the season was over that anyone that wanted to see it, had seen it. Spoilers are always common around here.

Not a problem. I knew what I might find coming to this thread well after the season was over.
